What it offers

Grootmeesters offers hand-painted canvas work in old-master, pop-art and abstract styles. The page distinguishes its painted canvases from prints and says each is stretched on a wooden frame with hanging hardware. Its catalog labels the Banksy “Love is in the Bin” design an exact replica and describes other works as being in the style of Françoise Nielly or Leonid Afremov; these are reproductions or artist-inspired paintings, not originals by those named artists. Customers can request a custom painting from a chosen image or in a specified size. Check the exact design, dimensions and framing on the listing; the page states free delivery in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Fit and details to verify

Compare the listed reproduction or artist-inspired style, canvas dimensions and frame with the intended room; confirm custom-order details before commissioning.

Canvas, frame and hanging

Each painting is stretched over a wooden frame and fitted with hanging hardware, so it can go up on a wall straight away. The sides of the canvas are painted as well, which gives a finished look without the need for a separate border. Paint is applied directly to the canvas rather than printed onto it, so brush marks and surface texture stay visible. Everything needed to hang the work comes with the painting, which keeps setup simple for a first wall display in any room.

Materials and handwork

Paintings are made with quality paint on canvas without acid content of museum grade. Because no paint machine takes part in the process, the work shows the craft and care of the artist, including small irregularities that give each piece its own character. Colours can shift slightly from the photo or image that inspired a custom painting, which is a normal part of working by hand. Every design is produced by experienced artists who pay close attention to detail and finish.

Our full take

How Grootmeesters compares

Frequently asked questions

Are Grootmeesters paintings prints?+

The company says its canvases are hand-painted with paint and brush rather than printed; named artist-inspired designs and reproductions are identified on their listings.

How is a painting made from a customer photo?+

A favourite photo can be turned into a hand painted picture by one of the company's artists. The artist works from the image, so the finished piece has its own brushwork and character. Sizes can be chosen to match a specific wall, and the canvas is stretched and fitted with hanging hardware before it is sent out. Because a person paints the picture, small differences in tone compared with the original photo are normal.

Which painting styles are part of the collection?+

The collection covers old master style works, pop art, abstract paintings and street art. Classic scenes, portraits and well known masterpieces also appear in the range. Some designs are exact replicas of named works, while others are painted in the manner of a particular artist. Many designs come in several sizes, which gives buyers a broad choice for living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms.

What makes hand painted canvas different from a print?+

A print is produced by a machine and sits on the surface of the canvas. A hand painted work is built up with real paint, brush strokes and layers added by an artist. The result has texture, depth and subtle variation that a mechanical print does not carry. The company builds its wall art this way and works without printed canvases.
